Stop Giving Your Kids an Allowance—Do This Instead to Make Them Wealthy

Let’s be honest, fellow moms. Slipping your kid a crisp $10 bill every week might keep the “Mom, can I have money?” whining at bay (although it likely won’t), but it’s not necessarily doing much for their financial future.

We’re not saying allowances are the devil (they’re definitely better than nothing), but if you want to raise kids who’ll be genuinely wealthy someday—not just “I can afford nice shoes” wealthy, but “I have actual financial freedom” wealthy—then it’s time to step up your money game at home.

Here at Major League Mommy, we know firsthand that financial literacy is the gift that keeps on giving. So let’s ditch the basic allowance model and build something better, shall we?

Why Traditional Allowances Fall Short

Traditional allowances teach kids exactly one thing: money appears regularly with minimal effort. That’s… not exactly how adult finances work, right? When we hand over a weekly allowance:

  • Kids rarely connect money with actual work or value creation
  • They don’t learn to spot opportunities or take financial initiative
  • The “income” is fixed, teaching them to live within artificial constraints
  • There’s no incentive to grow or improve their money management skills

Don’t get us wrong, teaching kids to budget a set amount is a valuable skill. But it’s just one tiny piece of the financial literacy puzzle.

The Wealth-Building Alternative: The Family Economy

Instead of a simple allowance, create what we call a “Family Economy”—a mini financial ecosystem right in your home that mimics real-world money principles. Here’s how it works:

1. Base Pay + Commission Model

Rather than a flat allowance, structure your kids’ earnings like this:

  • Base Pay: A small amount for their role as part of the family team and handling certain responsibilities (basic cleaning, helping around the house, maintaining certain grades, etc.)
  • Commission Opportunities: Additional earning options for above-and-beyond tasks that contribute extra value (mowing lawn, deep cleaning bathroom, meal prep)

Why it works: Kids learn that while some income might be guaranteed, wealth comes from seeking opportunities to add value beyond the minimum.

2. Set up an Investment Account

This is where the magic happens! Set up a system where your kids can invest their earnings:

  • You can open a custodial account with an institution like Vanguard or you can try beginner-friendly apps like Acorns or Stockpile or just add money to a high yield savings account.
  • Added bonus: You can match their investments dollar-for-dollar to incentivize saving
  • Review statement together monthly to watch their money grow and learn from any changes

3. Encourage Entrepreneurship

This is our favorite part! Help your kids start small businesses:

This is seriously where our free Kidpreneur Nation community really comes in handy and is a great starting point for you and your child!

4. Implement the Three-Jar Method (With a Twist)

Upgrade the classic save/spend/share approach:

  • Wealth Building Jar: For investments, business growth, and future business ventures
  • Freedom Jar: For discretionary spending they control
  • Giving Jar: For developing generosity and community connection

The twist? Let them decide the percentages after explaining the purpose of each jar (you can give a little guidance of course). Having agency over their money distribution teaches critical decision-making and they get to eventually see the results of the decisions they made in that moment.

5. Real-World Money Challenges

Make financial literacy fun with monthly challenges:

  • Grocery store challenge: Give them $20 to prepare a family meal
  • Comparison shopping tasks: Find the best deal on something the family needs
  • Bill analysis: Walk through a utility bill to understand household costs
  • Stock market game: Select stocks together and track performance
  • … and participate in the Kidpreneur Nation community where we offer challenges of our own.

Benefits Beyond the Bank Account

This approach doesn’t just teach kids about money. It develops their entire relationship with work, value, and personal growth. Here are some other benefits:

  • Develops problem-solving skills and creativity
  • Builds remarkable self-confidence and agency
  • Creates natural conversations about larger economics
  • Instills an entrepreneurial mindset from a young age

Raising kids who understand that wealth comes from creating value, making smart investments, and taking calculated risks is truly something special.

Wrapping Up

Traditional allowances, while convenient, simply don’t prepare children enough for building real wealth. By implementing a family economy system with opportunities for earning, investing, entrepreneurship, and meaningful money management, you’re setting your kids up for genuine financial success.

Don’t stress about it though! Start small. Pick just one element from above to implement this week. Remember, we’re playing the long game here! The lessons they learn now will compound more impressively than any investment account.
