Postpartum Hotels: Why I’m Seriously Thinking About It

Like the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, and it’s disappointing that while the saying remains, there is barely any support around women going through postpartum by the majority of countries and governments around the world. The idea of pregnancy scared me and it’s not the whole pushing part; it’s the fact I would realistically be alone for the majority of it as in the current climate my partner, who works for himself, can’t afford to be off longer than that and my family all work hard so I would just have to work through it solo.

I think this is why both millennials and Gen Z are put off from becoming a mom, and it’s not because they don’t want kids; it’s because they don’t want to go through it on their own, or maybe they are scared of the lack of money they will have forever.

I promise I am going to stop being negative, as it’s so easy to continue to dwell, but motherhood is something I’ve always wanted, and no matter the hardship, I know I will be left with no regrets. That being said, I am seriously considering booking into a postpartum hotel for the first 2 weeks after giving birth, and I will tell you exactly why.

What Is a Postpartum Hotel?

Essentially, you come for one or for however long you need to stay, and with that, you have fresh bedding, your clothes are washed, and there is 24/7 baby care so you can rest and recover. But also you have that constant women-to-women support during the whole process, which is emotionally, physically and mentally needed.

When you give birth, you are basically on demand to that baby’s needs 24/7, to the point where you barely have enough time to rest but with help, they will be there to take some of the load from you so you can get some rest maybe have a hot bath and everything in between.

It also gives you and your partner some parenting tips that you might have never had the opportunity to know. These women are well-versed with babies and all the little hacks you get them to settle, and it’s just a lifesaver for new partners to ease you into this whole lifestyle change.

Why I’m Seriously Thinking About It?

If that description of the hotel isn’t enough to convince you of why I’m seriously thinking about saving up and splurging on this, then I will give a little more detail.

The full range of services that follow with the week you are there and are promised not to be limited to are medical care, emotional support, recovery support, parenting education, network and community, and holistic wellness. From having nursery room accessories for early baby development to all the accessories a new mother would need. It would be like having a community of nurses, mothers and genuinely nice people with you at all times, so whether you need space or you need constant support, you have access to it.

There are several reasons which make it sound like a dream, but there are some personal reasons why I would love the opportunity to have a week in a postpartum hotel.

I’m Scared

I am scared; like I mentioned before, I think we are all scared about this at some point because we don’t want to get it wrong. We want to be perfect, but the idea of being perfect all the time is insanely unrealistic, and I know I will make mistakes, but I think we all need our hands held to guide us into this new life change.

I am also scared of postpartum depression, and while that might sound odd to a few, it’s a genuine concern of mine. I don’t want to go through 9 months of ups and downs to be left depressed for both my baby and partner, not only because it’s not fair on them but also because it’s not fair on myself and if a week in a postpartum hotel can improve even the slightest in reducing my chances of it, I will take it because I deserve it.

I Deserve It!

That also moves me onto my next point is that I deserve it, I’ve carried, cried and pushed a whole human out… I think it’s the least any mother deserves, and I know this is a very new concept around the world, especially in the Western world, but do we remember the days when women were allowed to stay in the hospital for up to 5 days after childbirth? Everything is so different now, and we are expected to make it an in-and-out experience with no help, guidance or support as soon as you leave the hospital doors.

It’s a shame that while it’s positive that postpartum hotels are becoming more widely known and more facilities are opening, it’s still a new concept and it’s being capitalised on, while you have 24/7 support and the nurses and staff work so hard and deserve that money but not out of the pockets of the mothers and should be a government scheme, in my opinion, like they do in places such as France and Japan.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it’s pretty obvious why any woman would love the opportunity to stay in a luxury hotel and have the support and guidance they need but in some countries, like my mind it doesn’t come without a price. While of course I am considering it still minus the extortionate price I am a strong advocate for women and their right to basic support during the hardest experience we have to go through.

Not to mention governments are expecting us to have children to ‘deal’ with the ageing population, which is absolutely disturbing how they view us but that also makes sense because if they did value women, there would already be government subsidies and schemes on postpartum care in place already but that is a discussion that I hope we get to have and is listened to in the near future.
